Fum Fum Fum

Back Story

Few carols of Spanish origin are popular in English speaking countries but "Fum Fum Fum" (rhymes with foom, foom, foom), a Catalan carol, has certainly gained in popularity in recent years.  It is likely that this carol dates back to the Renaissance era. The nonsense sound of "fum fum fum" is an onomatopoeic imitation of a stumming guitar. There are several translations and alternate verses to the song. The lyrics for the last verse on this arrangement are written by Ricky Tims.

Lyrics

Fum Fum Fum  (last verse lyrics by Ricky Tims)

On December five and twenty, fum, fum, fum.
On December five and twenty, fum, fum, fum.
For a blessed Babe was born
Upon this day at the break of morn
In a manger poor and lowly
Lay the Son of God most holy, fum, fum, fum!

Little stars up in the heavens, fum, fum, fum
Little stars up in the heavens, fum, fum, fum
If you see the baby cry oh do not answer with a sigh;
In the night your light is streaming
Pierce the darkness with your gleaming, fum, fum, fum.

Come we now to greet the morning, fum, fum, fum.
‘Tis the end of all forlorning, fum, fum, fum.
Leave behind your every care and spread good
Tidings everywhere. It is time for joyous singing,
“Peace on earth,” our chorus ringing, fum, fum, fum.
