The Holly and The Ivy

Back Story

The holly and ivy were a favorite subject for mediaeval carolers. There are historical indications that this song might even have pagan origins that date it back over 1000 years. In later times however, the holly, with its evergreen leaves, thorny vines, and red berries, assumed certain symbolism in the life and suffering of Christ. It is interesting that the song is titled "The Holly and the Ivy" when the Ivy is hardly mentioned in the lyrics at all. One of the most thoughtful and insightful articles written on the subject is by David Beaulieu on About.com. More information is also available on Wikipedia.

Lyrics

The arrangement on this recording is instrumental only, but the lyrics are included here.

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown.

The holly bears a blossom
As white as lily flower
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To be our sweet Saviour.

The holly bears a berry
As red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To do poor sinners good.

The holly bears a prickle
As sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
On Christmas Day in the morn.

The holly bears a bark
As bitter as any gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
For to redeem us all.

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown.
