Christmas in a Small Town

Back Story

Anyone with fond Christmas memories of times and places in bygone years will find this new song written by Ricky Tims to be charming and inspiring. It is sure to rekindle memories long forgotten. Ricky wrote this song in 2005, just two years after moving to the tiny mountain town of La Veta, Colorado. The quaint simplicity of the town is expressed in the lyrics of the song. It is dedicated to the town of La Veta.

Winter night, moonlit night, gentle winds are blowing,
All around in the little town twinkling lights are glowing.
Candy canes, frosted window panes, mistletoe, and kisses,
Carols ring, everyone will dream secret Christmas wishes.

Chorus
Christmas in a small town is perfect like a rainbow,
It's peaceful as a sweet dream and it's fresh like falling snow.
Christmas in a small town is precious like an angel,
I wish the world could always be like,
Christmas in a small town.

Simple gifts, precious gifts from the heart are given,
Joyful praise to the Christ child raised to the highest heaven.
Make a wish, make a Christmas wish for the world around you,
Pray for peace, pray for perfect peace and may God's love surround you.

Bridge
Church bells ring, it's Christmas Eve,
Children trim the Christmas tree,
Mom's and dad's say, "Just believe
That Santa's on his way!"

Production Notes

In 2003, just before Christmas, I moved to the tiny mountain town of La Veta, Colorado. I would have never thought that my life journey would take me to a town with a population of 925. However, the little hamlet stole my heart. The people are genuine, the pace is slow, the simplicity of life is endearing, and the spirit of the peaks surrounding the town seem to generate a sense of calm and spirituality that permeates the region and fosters "peace on earth and good will toward men." In 2005, these factors inspired me to begin writing a Christmas song to use in my upcoming local Christmas concert. Christmas in a Small Town became more than just a song, it became a thing - an inspiration - a memory. The title phrase alone tends to conjure long-forgotten memories from another time - another place.

In 2007, La Veta began enjoying additional tourist traffic from the new tourist train. During December the train company presents the North Pole Express. For this event the train is decorated with lights while passengers enjoy a holiday experience complete with caroling, hot chocolate, and, for all the children, an opportunity to sit in Santa's lap.

During one of my performance I was singing Christmas in a Small Town when the train came rolling into town. The audience could easily look out the windows and see the train returning from it's evening journey. The falling snow and decorated train, combined with the music, was emotionally overwhelming for many who were there. It doesn't get any more magical that that! A sense of pride seemed to well up within the audience and everyone commented on it as they left for the evening.

We all have these special memories - we all can relate to some time and some place that my be long ago or far away. I hope that Christmas in a Small Town will allow you to relive this memories.
